12 July – Orangemen’s Day

Today many Protestants in Northern Ireland will take part in marches for Orangemen’s or Marching Day. This remembers the victory of protestant Prince William of Orange over Catholic King James II of England, at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

13 July – Cap on oil spill

BP seems to have at last managed to halt the flow of oil escaping from the well head in the Gulf of Mexico. This is good news for locals and ecologists monitoring the effect on the environment.

14 July – Bastille Day

The French are celebrating Bastille Day today, which commemorates the day in 1789 that the French people stormed the royal prison. Today there is an Opera House on the same site!

15 July – Open Championship begins

My dad is happy that the Open Golf Championship at St Andrews begins today. This sees the top golfers from around the world competing for the title at the world’s oldest golf course.

16 July – Take That reunite

My cousin Kate is ecstatic that Take That are reuniting with Robbie Williams for their next album. When they were first famous in the 1990s the five lads from Manchester were her favourite!

18 July – Dreamliner shown off

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a brand-new lightweight plane, landed today at the Farnborough Air show. The plane’s reinforced plastic shell allows for a better experience for passengers, such as higher air pressure and bigger windows.
