5 July – On this day… Zeppelin’s first flight

The first flight of Count Zeppelin’s airship was reported on this day in 1900. This type of airship became a respected means of air travel until the Hindenburg disaster in 1937.

7 July – 7/7 bombings remembered

I can’t believe that it is five years since several bombs exploded in central London. A memorial in Hyde Park was unveiled last year to remember the 52 people killed.

8 July – Psychic octopus correct again

An octopus kept in an aquarium in Germany has correctly predicted the outcome of the Spain-Germany semi-final. Given a choice of boxes with flags in, Paul the octopus has moved to his choice of football team, correctly predicting the outcome of several matches!

9 July – Roman coin stash discovered

Dave Crisp, a very lucky man from Frome in Somerset, has discovered a huge collection of Roman coins that could be worth £250,000. They are now in the British Museum.

10 July – Asteroid snapped by space probe

Today the Rosetta space craft is on course to skim past an asteroid, taking photos and collecting data. 21 Lutetia is the asteroid chosen because it is untouched by collisions and because scientists don't know what it is made up of.

11 July – World Cup winners

The World Cup 2010 in South Africa came to an end this evening as Spain won against the Netherlands. The team proudly lifted the 5-kg, 18-carat-gold trophy that has been the official FIFA trophy since 1974.
