25 January – Peace talks in Northern Ireland

Gordon Brown has been having a busy time in Northern Ireland trying to help form an agreement between different parties. They can’t agree about when to take control of security from the British forces. Let's hope they sort something out, and that the Troubles don’t return.

26 January – Independence and arrival days

Two countries celebrate very different days today. India celebrates Republic Day, when, in 1950, it legally became its own country. Australia, on the other hand, today celebrates the day when the British Fleet first landed in Australia in 1788.

27 January – Holocaust remembered

Today is another important day to be remembered, the Holocaust Memorial Day. This was the day in 1945 that the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated from the Nazis.

29 January – Unclaimed baggage check

I’m planning a trip abroad soon, and came across this article about unclaimed baggage. I can’t believe that someone would accidentally leave a suit of armour on a plane!

30 January – ‘Unseen’ diamond seen

I met a friend Sarah who had just got engaged. Her engagement ring is lovely, but the diamond in it is nothing compared with the Wittlesbach-Graff diamond. This diamond is now 31 carats, and cost the new owner over $25 million. I don’t think Sarah’s fiancι paid quite that much!

31 January – Murray loses down under

My mate Jamie was ecstatic that Andy Murray got to the final of the Australian Open tennis today. Being Scottish by birth, like Murray, he was proud. However, Jamie wasn’t too pleased that he lost the tennis match in straight sets!
